In these challenging times, where working from home can restrict both a physical and social outlet, it is even more important to address the potential negative effect on our physical and mental well-being.
“I have found during my work; the physical body is often very affected when the person is suffering from a mental health ailment. The reverse can often be the case.”
Humanistic Counselling
Humanistic counselling is a mental health approach that emphasises the importance of being your true self to lead the most fulfilling life. It’s based on the principle that everyone has a unique way of viewing the world. This view can impact your choices and actions. It also involves a core belief that people are good at heart and capable of making the right choices for themselves. If you don’t hold yourself in high regard, it’s harder to develop your full potential.
As a counsellor working in community Mental health teams, I have witnessed many people move from being disabled by virtually no self-esteem, often caused by trauma in their young life, to valuing themself and their life.
It is an excellent model for helping people reach their potential, increase positive self-regard, and enjoy life.
Integrative Yoga Therapy
Essentially, yoga therapy is the application of yoga practices to alleviate physical and mental health conditions, promote self-care, and encourage overall well-being.
The science of Yoga covers many practices; breath control, relaxation, cleansing practises, stretching, and meditation. In Integrative Yoga Therapy, we do an in-depth assessment to assist in finding what you need to help yourself heal from conditions, enhance your immune system, release blockages within the energy system and find an inner sense of peace and balance. A plan is formed, and a self-practice is designed for the client to do with the therapist’s help.
Practising at home in between sessions is recommended. It can be very enjoyable, leaving one with enhanced energy and able to relax better as the tensions are released from the layers of muscle.
This approach is ideal for releasing stress, relaxing anxiety & depression, correcting postural problems, releasing trauma held in the body’s memory, improving lung capacity & blood pressure, and enhancing the immune system, to name a few conditions. The whole body feeling better strongly impacts the mood.
